Re: Death by Tire Explosion
ah man, when i was 17 after school was over i drove with my buddy to the gas station to put air in my tire because it was low. i had no idea anything like this could happen. i was pumping air into it and my buddy had his head right beside it to listen to it to see if air was leaking. i filled it up to the point it looked like all the other tires, and the goddamn thing blew up with my buddy's head right next to it. it didn't hurt him, and it didn't hurt me, it just seemed like one of those movies where a gunshot goes off in a car or a grenade blows up in a house, we both were dazed. after that i don't fuck with tires.

Re: Death by Tire Explosion
I did the first few years of my apprenticeship in a truck shop doing fleet maintenance. We were to take a full day safety course on split rims and the violent damage that can occur if the ring did not seat properly or the groove in the rim was deteriorated. A few days later one came off at only around 30 psi while being aired up by a careless tech while still on the vehicle vertical. At 30 psi there was still enough energy for the ring to come out and go right through one side of a transport trailer reefer unit tearing all the AC lines out of it and embedded in the inside wall. After seeing this I was hell bent on doing whatever I could to not be the tire guy.

Re: Death by Tire Explosion
[QUOTE=r.p.mcmurphy;6921438]Can any gearheads out there explain what happens in these cases? How many PSI are they using? Can this happen to any tire? Is this strictly a 3rd world phenomenon?[/ I worked 5 years as an engineer for a company that makes wheel ends for semi trucks in America. Basically every hub and brake assembly is made by us. Company name is C**M*T. Anyway, it looks to be a split rim that caused this. These are extremely dangerous and illegal in the USA and most developed countries. |
