I believe he was a maintenance man, so I'm guessing that's a length of steel or platform or some other object he was taking to use somewhere. I think in his ultimate wisdom he failed to factor in that when travelling up on 45 degree angle the space between the escalator steps and the ceiling gets shorter unless the roof is engineered on the same angle. Clearly not in this case, or not enough.
