Dead Gold Miners Removed by Excavator
Colombia. At least five people died and two others were injured this Saturday when an illegal open-pit gold mine collapsed in the department of Tolima. The accident occurred in the early morning, the Ombudsman's Office detailed on social media, where it asked the authorities to "provide immediate attention to the situation of illegal mining to prevent further tragedies and protect the environment." "It's regrettable,", adding that the collapse was caused by "the misuse of those machines" used in illegal mining. Last September, another mining accident held the country in suspense for two days, until 23 miners who had been trapped in the shaft of a gold mine operated by the Canadian company Aris Mining in the municipality of Segovia, in the department of Antioquia, were rescued alive. Illegal mining is present in 29 of Colombia's 32 departments, according to data from the Attorney General's Office. In 2022, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) revealed that 73% of alluvial gold mining in the country was illegal, exacerbating environmental pollution from mercury and deforestation. |

I’ve had the same problem with the pit mine in my yard. It’s already killed five Mexicans and a dog. The trick is to not care.

Back in '00 two guys were using a backhoe to dig the portal open of a mine near where our cabin is sierra co. The slope shifted causing the bank they were working to fall on top of them. Backhoe was still idling when they were found a day and a half later. |
