Re: Crane Operator Hit in the Head by Falling Crane Hook Block
If you look close the rear cable disappears. There is a main line and a "whip" line. The main line had the big block (hook) you saw at the beginning of the video on a parted line, and the other has the "headache ball" on a single line. The headache ball is what fell on him and it looks like the ball still has some cable attached. What most likely happened is he was extending the boom and talking. Thus not paying attention to what his lines were doing and neglected to keep lowering the whip line to keep up with the boom extending. The headache ball hit the boom and broke the cable, hence the disappearing cable coming off the drum. And it shows the crane wasn't up to par because both lines should have an anti-two block installed preventing this type of thing by shutting down certain parts of the hydraulics if one of the hooks gets too close to the sheaves at the top of the boom. |

Re: Crane Operator Hit in the Head by Falling Crane Hook Block
At first I thought he got hit bc he got out of the cockpit, but after I watched it a few times, it looks like the poor guy would have been screwed either way. That crane doohicky made a pretty steep dent in the cab. |

Re: Crane Operator Hit in the Head by Falling Crane Hook Block
Which was on the ground where he landed? Looked like a blown hyd line flopping around to me. But I could definitely be wrong. Edit: nevermind it was the rope still coming down. |

No. Hard hats don’t do much to be honest. They help when you bump your head or a small tool falls from a reasonable height. Heavy shit like this is unstoppable.
