Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I believe the purpose of that technique is to gain compliance by deliberately provoking a fight or flight response. They want to scare you into following the officer's commands in order to gain control of the situation quickly as possible. And im guessing that looking back on law enforcement's long history, they've learned that giving off an air of authority is the most successful method to achieve that goal.

There are videos on this site where officers will attempt to be "officer friendly" and they usually end like what we see here.

The challenge is that there's way too many variables that could be in play (mental health/drugs/booze/suicidal etc.) that could make gaining compliance impossible and the officer might only have seconds to try and figure out the safest option for all involved.

I've seen videos of people on drugs or mentally screwed-up getting hit with a taser and keep on coming. There are definitely times when a taser should be used instead of a firearm but with this guy acting so aggressive and unpredictable, this wasn't one of them. If I'd been that officer I would have had my service weapon drawn too. It sucks getting stabbed to death

You've never used a taser before, I assume. If you had, you'd know that attempting to use one on someone who's rushing you with a deadly weapon is a terrible idea. You'll most likely miss, and then, he's going to kill you because you're not in a position to escalate, it's too late.
