Yep...the good ol' 21 foot reactionary gap principal. Meaning when challenged with an edged weapon, anything inside that gap is green lighted for lethal force. When I train folks it goes something like this....If faced with an edged weapon, if he is within that gap it is game on for lethal force. To break it down, if he is within that 21 foot reactionary gap he can/will get to the officer before the officer's has a chance to get a single shot off during a deadly force encounter. There have been officers stabbed to death by a dead man, meaning that even if you are dumping numerous rounds into him (particularly where he is running toward you) his forward momentum will keep him coming right for you.

How you overcome this is to fire your weapon while getting off of the X. He comes at you, you should always move to the left or right and get out of his forward trajectory.
