What probably saved him was the fact that his body was crushed, then twisted. Use the same technique for temporarily stopping bleeders during surgery using a clamp: pinch, twist, release, and the elastic forces in the vessels actually seal them fairly effectively, though you can't disturb them too much or they start to bleed again. I *am* amazed, however, that the descending aorta and/or the femoral arterial branches managed to do so that effectively. They are huge vessels, with high blood pressure. Luckiest bastard in the world, even for losing his legs. |
