On May 16, 2026, an inmate named Nasib S.was shot dead by police in self-defense outside the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, after violently attacking a constable with a knife during a bold escape attempt.

A four-member police team escorted 3 prisoners, incl. Nasib from Central Jail to the Civil Hospital for a routine medical check-up prior to a scheduled court hearing.

After the check-up, around 1:30 PM, Senior Constable Jasdeep S., who suffers from asthma, was escorting Nasib toward an ambulance in an e-rickshaw. Nasib managed to free his hands from his handcuffs, pulled out a smuggled sharp-edged knife, and stabbed the constable repeatedly in the face, hands, and legs.

The altercation spilled out of the e-rickshaw into a narrow lane. Even though they were tied together by an escort rope, they fell to the ground as Nasib desperately tried to snatch the officer's loaded service revolver.

Constable Jasdeep fired an initial warning shot into the ground to deter the attacker. When Nasib refused to yield and kept reaching for the gun, the officer fired multiple retaliatory rounds in self-defense, striking the inmate.

Nasib Singh was rushed back into the Civil Hospital but succumbed to his bullet wounds during emergency treatment. Constable Jasdeep Singh was admitted to the hospital and is currently out of danger.

The core focus of the Police investigation is to figure out how a high-risk inmate managed to smuggle a knife into custody, whether he had it inside the jail premises, or if outside accomplices handed it to him during transit.

Nasib was a convicted criminal and an undertrial facing seven ongoing cases, including murder, attempt to murder and drug trafficking.
