India, Six to seven unidentified men attacked Congress leader Manoj Mhatre with machetes after pumping bullets into him outside his Bhiwandi residence on Tuesday.

Mhatre was rushed to Thane's Jupiter Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The incident took place around 9.30pm, when Mhatre, leader of the house in Bhiwandi-Nizampura Municipal Corporation, stepped out of his house.

Police are going through the CCTV footage recovered from Samruddhi Apartments; the faces of two men have been captured on camera.

"The reason for the attack is yet to be known. The men came in a car, attacked Mhatre with choppers, opened fire at him and drove away," said inspector Vijay Bhise.
