Don't forget about how cold that water is. If she had just jumped into the water she wouldve died a lot quicker because the body's first reaction to being submerged in freezing water is to gasp, which would kill her from drowning before hypothermia would start becoming an issue. If she was conscious in the car, the method she chose would've been a drawn out, psychological and physiological worse experience in comparison.
