They do this on purpose. Newer phones, the kind with great cameras. Track you, save things like where photos and videos are taken, save basically everywhere you go.

So they use burner phones obviously. And they seem to use old pre gps phones to record videos. I'm guessing so their videos don't give away any location encrypted in it. I'm no technology expert. But I'm guessing that's why the poor video quality.

Yeah, it is called EXIF data. Actually it's saving all "metadata" about recordings, like time, date, GPS coordinates, type of phone, of camera sensor and a lot of other infos.
