It made me think of the difference between these men and a serial killer who would do the same.

Gang member: Seen by peers as tough/crazy/dangerous.

Motive is likely punishment.

Enjoyed humiliating rival members.

Skilled with weapon.


Serial killer: Seen as sick, disturbed and perverted but only after getting caught as they usually act alone.

Do it for various reasons but not usually humiliation. Likely a sexual reason.

Motive is control and then murdered to avoid detection.

Can hone killing/mutilation skills up until capture.

I'm not an expert just my initial thoughts.
