Note: one of the victims was a nine-year-old boy. I've checked the videos and I cannot see him. He was rescued alive, so obviously none of the corpses in bad shape seen in the videos. If I'm wrong, please report.
Pan-American Highway, Colombia
A tragic accident occurred at kilometre 45 of the Pan-American Highway, specifically on the stretch connecting Popayán and Cali. At around 7:00 a.m. this Tuesday, a minibus collided head-on with a tractor-trailer truck.
Following the collision, the cargo truck caught fire within seconds, and the front of the other vehicle was completely destroyed. Despite the rapid response from emergency services, the outcome was devastating: eight people, including the drivers and a minor, died in the incident.
As the hours passed, some of the identities of the victims have become known. One of those who died was Juan C.B., who was driving the cargo truck.
The van’s driver and his wife also lost their lives in the accident: Fernando G. and Natalia M.
Diego F., a 9-year-old boy, was another victim. Apparently, the child was under the care of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute. Initially, the minor was rescued alive after the crash but died while being urgently transported to a hospital in Piendamó.
It was also reported that two people survived: a man and a woman, who remain in critical condition due to their injuries.
Authorities have already begun the corresponding investigations to clarify the causes of the accident. Apparently, and the main hypothesis so far, is that there was a lane invasion and excessive speed by the vehicles. However, these are still preliminary reports, and investigations are expected to continue to determine exactly what happened.
