John Ridsdel was the president of a mining company operating in Mindanao, TVI Minerals Processing, Inc. He was previously the senior vice president and chief operating officer of TVI Resources Development, also operating in Mindanao (in some articles he is listed as its president), and still worked as a consultant for their parent company, Canada's TVI Pacific.

TVI's Canatuan open pit mine in Mindanao was the source of controversy for its entire 18-year existence, for both environmental concerns and human rights abuses being inflicted on the native Subanon people. These include building the mine on Subanon land without permission and environmental destruction on a sacred site, in non-compliance with the Indigenous People Rights Act (IPRA) of the Philippines, and forced evictions and acts of intimidation and violence committed by the company's private militia, the SCAA, which has included shooting at protesters.

Despite a provincial ban on open pit mining in 2011, TVI continued to operate the Canatuan open pit mine until its resources were exhausted in 2014.

TVI continues to be involved in numerous controversial mining operations in Mindanao, with its activities raising many more concerns about human rights abuses, including accusations of links to the murders of indigenous Lumads from August to September 2015, and intimidation of Subanons, many of whom have been murdered:

“The people are afraid to talk. Fears are in their eyes. Many expressed their sufferings, their fears of armed men working for mining corporations and politicians but they refused to put it into an affidavit,” Ablon told the Inquirer here on Friday.

From among villagers they have interviewed, Ablon said only two, one of them a teenager, spoke about harassment by armed men but they, too, would not put their complaints in writing.

“A frightening situation has gripped the town of Bayog as more than a hundred people have been reported to have been summarily executed [over the past months]. Residents believe that the extrajudicial killings going on were related to the operations of TVI Resources Development,” he said.

I'm simply trying to illuminate the fact that you can't label all people of one religion as the same. We are ALL individuals and we all behave differently. I don't blame one Christian for the atrocities of another. I blame individuals for their own conduct. The Republican party is filled with generalizing rhetoric. A: Invest in the people at the bottom via social programs, education and healthcare so that the NEXT generation will have HOPE and lead productive lives. (very effective)
