Businessman Running a Marathon Dies Meters in Front of Finish Line
Tragedy struck the João Pessoa Half Marathon in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, when a 48-year-old man died suddenly just meters from the finish line. The incident occurred on the morning of November 16th, as businessman José da Silva Nogueira Netto was competing alongside thousands of other runners in the race. Just meters from the 21-kilometer finish line, the CEO of an optical company collapsed before the astonished eyes of dozens of people who had rushed to offer support to family and friends. Organizers and paramedics immediately attempted to resuscitate him for over an hour, but their efforts were in vain as he had already passed away. Meanwhile, dozens of people continued running alongside him. He ran often. According to local news outlets, Da Silva was a regular at athletic events and had completed a good number of marathons and half-marathons throughout his life, so his death came as a surprise to the community. However, a close friend explained that he had a congenital heart defect, which may have been responsible for his sudden death, just as he was about to reach the finish line once again. |

If his friend knew he had a congenital heart defect, then obviously he knew it himself. Still took the risk. Well, at least he died quickly and doing what he loved to do. Beats the hell out of a slow grind with cancer like my brother went through.

Or, for a certain demographic, running from the police.

So, no one could drag him over the finish line and at least let him die a winner?

Hard to feel sympathy for him if he knew he had a heart issue and decided to keep running. That's not tempting fate, that's walking up to fate and spitting in his face.
