Here, in my country, we make this kind of events in the country, but every bull has a "package" wrapped around their neck, filled with some amount of money (the bigger the bull, the higher the amount). Basically, what you have to do is to "ride" the bull and take the bag of money, using your hands (no weapons I mean), be fast, and have some balls. If you succeed, then you earn the money, but I have just seen it once in like 4 events I went. Every bull has 5 minutes in the square, and then is recovered by his/her owner using the rope (that's the use, you see?). No, the bull is not killed in any way, and most harmless. not for control probably. just to keep it from wandering too far from the celebration area. it is probably tied to a pole or a tree. everyone's welcome to get gored or trampled.
