Re: Brazil - Young Man Filmed Drowning

This is an example of why its important to stay calm when your in the water. We see him freaking out and burning all his energy within the first 15 seconds, not realizing he's caught in a whirlpool. His buddy with the camera seemed to be doing the safest thing he could to help, which was to point out an escape route, but the roar of the water probably made it difficult to hear, and his panic made it difficult to think.

Re: Brazil - Young Man Filmed Drowning

Why did they just stand filing instead of at least trying to help him...
It's a submerged hydraulic jump. This causes powerful swirling currents and all the air being churned into the water can lower buoyancy. It can be difficult to escape from, the water picks up speed cascading over the rocks then when it reaches the slower moving water downstream, it generates a recirculating current that pushes the water down and then back on itself, trapping debris of a certain buoyancy, which usually includes people.

It can be difficult to spot, but is especially prevalent around weirs and natural watercourses where water directly above and below the turbulence is slow moving and when the water downstream is relatively deep. It can look innocuous but can be harder to escape than a rip current, as whilst with a rip current you can escape it by remaining calm and floating until it releases you just beyond the breaking waves, with a submerged jump and recirculating current you kinda have to get lucky and have it spit you out, fighting it can almost be worse, as you'll tire quickly without increasing your chance of excape significantly. Rescuers without proper equipment are just as likely to get trapped too.

This area at the base of a weir is colloquially known as a drowning machine, with good reason.

I don't even know Portuguese, but when the kid got sucked under the last time, the guy filming going "UHNNNN" is universal for "yep, he's dead"

Re: Brazil - Young Man Filmed Drowning

probably would just end with both of them drowning, drowner grabs onto rescuer and then they both get sucks down, looks like some strong current. i feel like a confident strong swimmer but i wouldnt want to hop into that

only curious why they were like fighting it instead of trying to go with the flow and get out where its calmer
He was caught in an eddy. That strong current would have been nearly impossible to escape and if he did he would have been exhausted. That was the worst area to try and swim in. Never mess around in fast moving water! All that weight and power will take your life!

Re: Brazil - Young Man Filmed Drowning

Probably too exhausted or maybe under the influence
He should have chilled the fuck out, relaxed, and rode that shit downstream to calmer water
