This career choice of hers has probably gone on for a while and the mother has repeatedly told her how it would end.

The mother was dealing with this idea every night for some time.

She's recording her so she can remember.
Seems extremely plausible to me, although hard to imagine for most ppl. Better theory than her just being plain evil I think. Weird, maybe, prolly not a normal situation to a western lifestyle either, unless familiar with a family member who's an addict or something
