That led them to give him time to decide on a final course of action and time to move on it.

The gun he got by trading heroin for it, he lies about hitting a cash jackpot at a casino, and he's been charged with possession with intent. If it isn't obvious by now, dumbass was a horse dealer out making sales that night and he had both that and drug money on him plus the gun that he was already too much of a felon to legally possess. That means that in his mind, he's going in for the rest of the prime of his life (and he was probably right). That kind of fear is what makes morons like him shoot cops, and they should've known that rather than let up on him in that moment when they could have gotten him away from the car. Just his desperate robotic recitations of the usual "I know my rights" bullshit and how nervously stubborn he was should've told them that there was some serious shit in that car and to expect the worst. It's a matter of settled precedent due to countless incidents like these.
