Boat Racing Championship Practice Run Goes Deadly Wrong
A young man, traveling with a racing delegation from Ca Mau Province in Vietnam, was performing a practice run on the Phung Hiep River Saturday morning, for the boat racing championship when his boat encountered large wake waves generated by a vessel traveling in the opposite direction. The heavy impact caused the motorized boat to capsize and break completely in half. Local residents pulled him from the water, but he was pronounced dead. Local government officials later visited the victim's family to offer condolences and financial support. The boat was a Vỏ lãi, a traditional narrow, long-tailed motorized watercraft equipped with a 20HP gasoline engine, widely used in the Mekong Delta. Prior to its cancellation, the championship was scheduled to host 48 athletes from various southern provinces, including Can Tho, An Giang, Ca Mau, Tay Ninh, and Vinh Long. Competitors were set to race across a 700-meter course along the Nguyen Trai street embankment. The first-place grand prize was valued at 40 million VND, alongside a brand-new composite boat, engine, and propeller set. The victim was taking a practice run on his own initiative when the accident happened and the leader of the Ward People's Committee also stated that the victim was not on the list of athletes expected to participate in the 2026 Nga Nam Ward Expanded Composite Boat Racing Championship. |

Lack of boating experience....if he saw the boat in front he would've known there was a wake behind...those hulls are surface riders...he was bound to flip....should've throttled down...Oh well
