Re: Bloke Shot in the Head, then Blood Pools Out His Mouth
Here's the gory detail to answer your question. When a high velocity projectile hits a fluid filled cavity/container it dumps the amount of energy that corresponds to: (Kinetic Energy=1/2mass*speed^2) The law of conservation of energy tells us that the energy cannot be dissipated unless it does some mechanical work which in this case results in a great amount of pressure inside the cranial cavity (hydrostatic shock) which causes the inner walls of the skull to expand due to the pressure wave, this causes the bones to fracture and the brain to virtually explode into mush, veins and arteries inside the skull are torn and this creates a rush of blood that usually escapes through the fissures in broken bones and through the nasal cavity and ear canals (because the timpanic membranes rupture due to the overpressure), in the case of high caliber pistols (.357, .44 Magnum) blood can rush out from the eyes too. blood also rushes from the cerebral cavity into the throat and blood flows through the mouth in some cases. |
