That was strange indeed. We can't see what initially caused his predicament, only the final stages of it. Why he went over the edge is a mystery. The center of gravity of the combined physical system bike-rider remained too low for it to ever have gone over the guardian barrier. So all he had to do was hang on tight to his bike and the worse he would have suffered would be a wipe out on the road - granted this could also prove fatal if he then got run over.
