Bee Attack at the Brazilian Supermarket Kills Elderly Man

A bee attack at a supermarket left one person dead and 11 others injured this Friday (19). According to the city hall, at around 11am, emergency teams from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) were called to respond to an incident involving a bee attack on a 74-year-old man.

At the scene, rescuers found the victim and other people under attack by bees, making it impossible for both the rescue team and the public trying to drive the swarm away to get close.

In an attempt to control the attack until the Fire Department arrived, rescuers palliatively used a fire extinguisher to keep the insects away and, when they approached the victim, they were also attacked, with six rescuers being slightly injured and later treated.

With the arrival of the specialized Fire Department team and the expulsion of part of the swarm, the victim was able to be treated by the Fire Department and SAMU, but he did not survive.

A total of 11 people were injured in the attack: six SAMU paramedics, three firefighters, and two women, aged 50 and 58, who were in the supermarket parking lot. After receiving first aid, the 50-year-old woman was taken to the emergency room.

According to the city hall, the swarm was possibly passing through, with the insects in a migratory period. The store manager told media that the bees had suddenly appeared. Employees closed the market's main door and sheltered residents who were outside.
