An explosion and fire aboard a barge in an industrial shipyard in Cartagena killed at least five and wounded at least eleven other workers. The explosion happened whilst the barge was undergoing maintenance. Emergency teams responded quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to other vessels.

The Maritime Authority has taken over the investigation into the cause of the explosion and suspended operations at the shipyard. Questions have been raised about whether required gas measurements were conducted before maintenance work began and if prevention systems failed.
