Re: A Bald Chinese Guy With A Scooter Battery In An Elevator In China
You are preaching to the choir. Have you tried buying a non-China made toaster? Many toaster brands, all Chinese crap that breaks in a few years max.

All clever jokes aside, what caused this battery to erupt? Help me out here nerds. (and I use the term “nerds” with all due respect)

Re: A Bald Chinese Guy With A Scooter Battery In An Elevator In China
Thermal runaway, i.e. a situation where the energy from a cell is released internally causing further damage to the structure of the cell, which releases even more energy, until it is no longer possible to stop the cycle. Basically, you have to damage the so-called separator between plus and minus sides (anode and cathode) either by high temperature or by a puncture with a sharp, conductive (metal) object. The extent of the fire is rather typical for this size of the battery, what is completely incredible here, is the speed how the whole situation escalated. Usually you hear the cracking sounds and see some minor smoke at least for a few seconds before the full blast. My hypothesis here would be either: - internal short circuit (which heated the insides of the battery and ignited many cells at once); - puncture of a cell (could the metal casing be so purely designed?); - manufacturing defect of a cell, which broke internally at a random moment. |

This fully justifies banning the transport of lithium batteries via an elevator. I know that after this I will use the stairs every time I have to take a lithium battery to street level, forbidden or not, I'm not an idiot. |

Must we throw out the psycho Sino batteries with the bath water? Perhaps an asbestos lined lithium battery carry sack? I enclose my 20lb Maine **** in a pillow case to go to the vet. I am 200 lbs but I am no match for a pissed pussy in a moving vehicle.
