He effectively performed a prefrontal Lobotomy. He will never have any joy or sadness in his life again. He will have a flat affect personality for the remainder of his life. He destroyed the frontal lobes of his brain. This is where a persons feelings/personality reside within the brain.

Psychologists actually performed this procedure by sliding a metal rod beside the eye in patients (Under anesthesia) into the brain area behind the forehead. The procedure destroyed that brain tissue. This is how society treated our most insane and institutionalized back in the 1940’s and 1950’s. This was a time before anti-psychotic drugs were invented. The procedure *fixed* them. Google it..
