I think that the victim was more seriously injured than he thought, that he had wounds that were not apparent until people started treating him on the ground. Adrenaline can mask pain and injuries, trust me, I can testify to this. It can easily make a knife stab feel like just being punched. If he was, and I believe he was, stabbed in the chest or abdomen, the knife could have easily nicked or punctured his heart or the aorta, or could also cause cardiac tamponade, any one of which would almost certainly cause him to bleed out and/or die as quickly as he did.
