How deep are these pools, and is swimming really something that if you have not practiced hundreds of times before you will not be able to do on your first time. I mean even in a situation where you’re about to drown? Now I’m wondering just how difficult it is to swim…

It is hard for me to believe that you are unable observe swimming pools for yourself (or on the web) to see that pool depths are clearly marked, vary from pool to pool, and often from end to end.

If your question is serious, then yeah, once you learn to swim, the knowledge stays with you without practice. Learning to swim is easy and involves breath/submersion control and leg/arm stroke technique. If you can throw a ball, you can learn to swim.

Here’s a lifesaving technique to teach your children who cannot swim. Blow out all the air in your body and sink to the bottom of the pool, when your feet touch the ground jump as hard as you can, taking a deep breath in when your head breaks the surface. Repeat this until you are in shallow water or can grab the side of the pool. I’ve taught this to kids 3 and up. It’s very easy to do. Sometimes it takes more than ten jumps but eventually you will make it to where you can touch. It’s energy efficient. You won’t tire out like you will active drowning. It’ll also help you learn to swim much faster because you’ll no longer be afraid of going in a bit too deep.

I genuinely wish more adults would take the time to teach this to children during the summer. It’s so much faster than teaching them to swim. It’ll also save you if you get tired of swimming and can’t keep yourself above water anymore. Sink, jump, breathe, repeat. Please teach your kids this very simple lifesaving thing.

I have the same problem understanding. But I’ve swimming since a baby. Sometimes the epiglottis spasms and cuts off the air, so no screaming and fairly quick asphyxiation even though he comes to surface repeatedly. This is my only explanation. :(

I'm Darwin crew just like you cuz it's fuuun but I don't believe low IQ was the cause here, just erroneous information on water depth and lack of impulse control maybe? which could be tied back to low IQ if one is a cynic, and yet I'm not. but yea, no darwin award here where I'm concerned, but this is merely conjecture, obviously
