I found it disturbing, whether it was real or not; my imagination ran with it. Something is divinely creepy about dying alone, especially if you start out thinking you might have a chance, then you get to that point of KNOWING you're about to die. This may be a fake, but it was well done. The eerie drone of the water adds to the effect.

The mask serves to make breathing impossible. If the mask was made of cotton, it will keep water in and air out of the mouth area. She could will herself to bend and take breaths, but the wet mask will make sure she takes in water. Also the twitching's all too real. Those last bursts of energy were pre-mortem spasms, not acted out. Lastly, she couldn't have released her contents because of the angle of her hips. It was upside down, not upright. just some logic, thassall.
