8 Killed, 19 Injured when Tanker Truck Hits a Car and Van
Yesterday in Mianyang, Sichuan. X. M. drove an overloaded heavy-duty tanker truck while driving through a continuous downhill curve. The tanker body marked with cement but the filling medium was actually filled with fly ash, and the weight center of the vehicle was too high. Currently, the driver X. M. has been under criminal detention. The tanker's body tilted and crashed into a passenger car and van. The Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security reminds that truck drivers must strictly abide by laws and regulations, do not exceed the limit, overload, speed, drive through sharp bends and steep slopes, long downhills, intersections, water and cliff roads, and pay attention to slowing down. Give way as required to ensure safe driving. Up to now, the police reported that the accident caused 7 people to die on the spot and 1 person died in the hospital, another 19 people were injured to varying degrees, and 4 vehicles were damaged to varying degrees. |

Coal, as the main energy resource of China, results in huge amount of fly ash and increasing public attention. Fly ash has become China's single bigger source of solid industrial waste currently. Toxins in fly ash not only pollute the local soil, air and water, but also cause harm to the health of people through the food chain.

Fly ash is the stuff left over when coal-fired power plants clean out their boilers. They are always looking for places to dump it. They probably paid this guy $10 to haul a load of it somewhere and dump it in a ditch. My bet is he wasn't even on the clock at his regular job hauling concrete, he was just making some movie money on the side. It used to be in the U.S. that there would be at least 1 fly-ash landslide in the U.S. every year, during the rainy season, sweeping away the local orphanages or elementary schools, or wherever else they dumped 2000 tons of this stuff on a hillside, and waited for it to get wet and then slide down hill and pollute a local stream. But that hasn't happened here in a few years, because there aren't any coal fired power plants left in the U.S. China is just trying to match our 1940's record for fly-ash accidents. |

Duke Energy dumps this crap all the time. Last huge dump that killed the Dan River they got off scot-free because their former CEO was governor of NC at the time.

Yeah, like I said, you would read about these disasters a couple of times a year in the Eastern U.S. I remember a few in Pennsylvania and New York. It seemed they always had the ash dump hill above either a hospital, or an orphanage. (Or a place where they stored kittens or puppies. Anywhere that the disaster would be 10 times worse than normal) I always wondered why they didn't pour that stuff into those coal mines in PA that have been burning underground for 80 years. Let those mines choke on THAT if they like burning so much. I bet they'd be out in a hurry. |

Know what the difference is between lobsters and a tanker truck accident? One is a group of crustaceans the other a group of crushed Asians.
