If I remember correctly, these students were hung for being homosexual. A "phenomenon" which has been described by multiple Iranian leaders as "non-existant" in their country.

That would be my first guess, didn't look too close but I remember the story you're referring to......I surmise that the public exhibition/lack of proper execution/respect was due to the fact that they were homosexuals; It's not like they're gonna give you respect if you are, in their eyes, 'an abomination'.

Terrible; the guy second from the right was fighting right to the end  You can see he almost has his bound hands to his neck; horrific way to die. The others seemed to die pretty quickly but this poor man was really suffering an horrendous death by slow strangulation |
