4 Killed when Classic Car Drove Onto Sidewalk Killing at Least 4
Another person died as a result of a tragic traffic accident that occurred on Saturday in Havana, Cuba. Y.M.C, 21, died on Sunday night after being surgically treated for multiple traumas and severe head trauma. With his death, the number of fatalities due to the accident rose to 4. The other 3 deceased are U. C. L, a journalist from the Prensa Latina news agency , who died at the scene, and the other two: Artistic director F.B.H. (51 years old) and O.G.C. (45 years old), who died. at the hospital. Of the six patients who remain hospitalized, one is in critical condition, another is very serious, 2 is serious and the other 2 are in intensive care. Last Saturday the driver of a classic car apparently lost control of the vehicle and drove onto a sidewalk. In the accident, 23 wounded were reported, including 3 minors who are being treated at the pediatric Hospital. Two of them are in "special care" and one in a "critical" state. In Cuba, traffic accidents are the fifth cause of death. Among the main causes is the bad state of the streets, the little street lighting and the poor state of the vehicles. Official data assure that during the inspections carried out in 2018, "technical deficiencies" were detected in 44% of the cars examined (63,966), mainly due to the braking system, steering and lights. Likewise, more than 36 thousand vehicles circulation permits that did not have the updated technical revision were withdrawn. |

Damn. So it was at a classic car type show thing? I imagine out of most drivers with cars, they are the type who would keep their classic cars in tip top shape. |

minka1. Cuba has many of these "classic" cars. Unlike ours that are cherished and looked after, these ones are basically run well beyond their expected lifespan. Most are a throwback to the 60's when imports from America stopped due to the Cuban missile crisis. They are kept on the road by using adapted parts or worn parts from other vehicles. In short they are death traps.

When Cuba opened up to the U.S. car collectors were salivating over all the old cars down there. They were organizing "Collector Car Tours" for people who wanted to buy them. When they got there, they found out that most of them had been so modified (American V-8 engine replaced with a 4 cylinder Russian diesel, with the mod done by cutting and welding) that they were just trashed. There was a LOT of talk about importing Cuban classics back to the U.S. but since no one would pay for a piece of junk, that talk died out. Some of them look good, but generally they are all scrap cars.

Yeah, well, Christine could actually reach 60 mph, and was self-repairing, whereas these are lucky to limp along at 25 mph, and parts fall off regularly. ( I guess it IS like Christine, if Christine was actually a leper car.)
