They were literally dragging each other down and drowning each other. Underwater it’s disorientating so they wouldn’t have known which way was up, panic would have made their heart rates quicken so breathing faster, taking in water.

Some people just can't handle the water. I'm one of 'em. I had an aunt who was a swimming instructor, and she taught me how to swim when I was about 9 or 10 years old. It was in the rectangular pool in our apartment complex, which was about 3 feet deep on the shallow end and 8 feet deep on the deep end. I could swim from one end of it to the other and back again, but I never figured out how to tread water no matter how she tried to teach me. If I stopped, I'd sink, because the whole process just felt extremely unnatural to me. So those laps were about survival.

It didn't take long for me to forget what she taught me, either. All it took was a couple of years without a pool. Went swimming just a few weeks ago, too, and it was fun, but getting dunked or flipped off the floatie chairs would trigger instant adrenaline, almost panic, and I couldn't actually swim for shit. I think that's just how it is with some people, in that being in the water just doesn't come naturally no matter how safe or comfortable they might feel initially. Put 3 such people in a pond like in this video, and they'll all be fucked.

Ronald Reagan was a lifeguard on the river that runs thru Dixon, Illinois IIRC. He claimed to have like 50+ saves. I suspect many of them were girls who feigned distress so they would get 'rescued' by Ronnie and get their tits fondled. Anyway, I was told by my mom who was a trained lifeguard in the 1940's that it was dangerous but you could try to 'cross chest carry' a drowning person. Maybe before the 'nuclear option' was invented.

Maybe a donkey punch to the head of the drowning followed by the carry would work...

Wow,you're not kidding. I'm sure I've seen him in early film roles, but I only recall him as middle-aged and elderly.
