if its a school bus, it is probably screened off from the inside to prevent kids from opening a window and getting out. and if those windows are closed, those kids do not have the power to break it. they probably just resorted to what kids do in confusing situation, look around and wait or just cry until somebody notices them.

It would take even longer to die of dehydration or starvation - days. Either way, I doubt any of those fates would make them look like they've been beaten silly. That second kid especially - he looks like he took a few good shots to the face and his nose looks kinda sideways. Did they use each other as battering rams trying to break free? I wouldn't be surprised if some far darker details surface about the circumstances of this incident.

you clearly don't live in a warm climate. Don't underestimate how quickly someone could die in it.
