Bystander effect http://www.wadsworth.com/psychology_...s/ps/ps19.html In this case it's obvious that there are fears about what might happen to those who intervene (physical harm, involvement with police procedures etc) but also the so called diffusion of responsibility plays a role. If someone was drowning, or victim of a car crash, then the bystanders' reaction could have been much different, but in this case i guess that almost all if not all the bystanders were paralyzed by fear and responsibility for intervention was shared among all the bystanders. |
