The height definitely will not kill them, but freezing water will, maybe not kill you instantly, but will shut you down really quick.

Everyone pretty much agrees on the fact that die probably died from the water being too shallow, not too cold. Look at how they're dressed and the surroundings; it's the middle of the fucking summer.
