Re: WTF? Cancer Can Do Some Disgusting Shit!
I get what you mean, just recently my cousins mother passed away from STAGE 4 colon cancer. Her say to it all was that she didn't want to cause any drama in her son's life, so she just kept her disease to herself. :[ By the time she told her son and went for treatment, the doctors told her she was diagnosed with STAGE 4 colon cancer. Only a miracle can cure that. |

Re: WTF? Cancer Can Do Some Disgusting Shit!
Poverty and alcoholism are bad enough, but poverty, alcoholism and terminal cancer disease create a devastating combination. While rooting through PubMed Central the other day, I found an article describing the case of a 44-year-old man, dependent on alcohol and tobacco, living in a poor rural area of Brazil. This patient suffered from advanced squamous oral cancer which had invaded his jaw, creating a large, ulcerated necrotic wound. He could not eat normally because food was expelled from the cancer ulcer, the stench was nauseating and worst of all, the wound was infested with wriggling maggots. Not surprisingly, the patient's mouth hygiene was also poor, with plaque-covered teeth, a bad smell and visible dental caries. Amazingly, his laboratory findings were normal except for a slightly low hematocrit, or volume percentage of red blood cells in blood (34% - the norm for men is 45%). All the maggots were manually removed using pincers and the wound cleaned with an aqueous chlorhexidine solution. A nasogastric tube was inserted for feeding because the food was being expelled from the cancer ulcer. Mercifully, the patient died 2 months later because of acute bleeding from the wound. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of oral cancer. It should be noted that both alcohol use and tobacco use are well-known risk factors for developing this tumor, as well as poor oral hygiene and poor nutrition. Smoking and other tobacco use, in particular, are associated with around 75% of oral cancer cases. Source · · · |

Holy shit Susan...you've outdone yourself. That is outstandingly horrific and I just love the drippy, festering hole. Sad situation, but my lord is it awful. This is something that should be posted in a large poster in every school to show the most graphic effects of alcohol and tobacco use...not to mention, brushing your teeth occasionally. |

Those maggots probably kept him alive all that time. Without them that wound would have abscessed and become septic long before. Septicemia is pure agony |
