I doubt the apparent filmers/whoever did this would DO this, but doesn't it kind of look like all the red and flesh are APPLIED (so making the face/skull look bigger) rather than being what's left (which one might presume would look smaller)? Like an intense horror prosthetic session. Again, I doubt it, but I nearly always have this impression whenever I see a de-facing: "Damn, that looks like MORE instead of LESS, somehow." Swelling & coagulating on-surface, perhaps?
