A lot of people didn't.  Infant mortality rates were sky high back in the day and still are in the poorest nations.Even with modern medical knowledge and equipment babies who aspirate thick meconium have poor outcomes; the stuff is as sticky as tar and irritates the lung causing a chemical pneumonia. When I was a micropreemie in the NICU 43 years ago, an 8 lb (most likely postterm) boy died from meconium aspiration while Mom was visiting me. The staff covered his incubator with a sheet. |
