Odd that this reminds me of the chicks we hatched in 5th grade...one of them had some weird growth on its tail section. The others kept pecking at it, by the time we moved it out of the box & away from the rest of the chicks it was too late, poor thing died.

The sad thing is, most people house rodents and rodent-like animals (think rabbits) in cages too small and don't pay enough attention to them. Hamsters make great pets if you handle them daily and provide them with at least four square feet (minimum) of walkable space, in addition to fruits and veggies and chewing toys. I personally like guinea pigs better because you could not handle them for six months and they'd still be friendly, plus they are diurnal. Hamsters are not.

Anyway, rats develop tumors and abscesses like humans grow beards. They're common and a part of life. Rats don't live long and are actually really expensive to keep because of their health. Let's not even get into megacolon. Yep, it's basically like it sounds.

As for the actual topic of the thread, it's too bad that some of those got to be that bad. However, if people are taking their little hamsters to the vet, then I won't yell too much. Poor little guys!

i had a gerbil once die of something called tyzzers...that was painful to watch.

Sorry to hear about your gerbil Depps. I just looked up tyzzers and it seems pretty painful.
