Unhappy Legs

Whoo-first post here. Sorry if I've done anything wrong with the links/images whatnot.

To preface this, my mother-in-law refuses to see a doctor for any reason at all due to "those bastards killing my parents" or something like that. She also is handicapped and doesn't really walk much/move much/take care of herself at ALL. Her legs are always swollen and weeping fluid too - it's important to the story below.

One day mom scratched the shit out of her lower leg and must have gotten some allergen or something under her skin. Within hours she had a rash; it didn't take long for large fluid-filled 'sacs' to form, burst, and begin a cycle of "heal briefly, swell/leak, crust, swell/leak, slough, repeat".

TL;DR - her leg is gnarly now and she still won't see a doctor. I don't know what she has, but I believe that it might be Venous Statis Dermatitis. I'm not a doctor or anything, so I do not know and until the woman caves in and sees a damned doctor, it's all supposition. But I thought ya'll might enjoy seeing a few pictures of her leg -- I had to sneak them because she ALSO refuses to let me take pictures of it to post on forums (med student/doctor-filled or otherwise).

Re: Unhappy Legs

You'll have to drag her to a doctor against her will eventually unless she decides she's going to let herself die. Something tells me she's one of those people who we see on here that waits and waits and waits until necrosis sets in and the limb can't be saved or some B.S. Some people.

Re: Unhappy Legs

Hairy Legs....

Oh and she's fixing herself up for a world of hurt. No telling what kind of infection she's got but she does have one. Highly likely it's some type of flesh eating bacteria. That shit lives on our skin (along with 1000's of other bacteria) and is considered an "Opportunistic" bug.
Her deep scratching could have basically opened the doors to death itself

Re: Unhappy Legs

darkest - if she's a diabetic, we don't know it. She probably IS, but she will not/would not/has not seen a doctor (except for when she broke her arm and was carted to the ER, delirious in pain) since at least 2010 - before that...let's see, I met her sometime in 2005 and she never went during that time!

I know she's setting herself up for the loss of the leg (worst case) or at least some horrible disfigurement via scarring (current case)...but she keeps saying "well, it's not SCREAMING PAIN right this second, I'll wait" and then when she's in horrid pain she agrees to go see a doctor...until the pain recedes yet again. It's a painful pattern to watch and hard to deal with. Especially for my wife, who is one of the biggest 'Mamma's Girl's' I've ever met in my life.

Tonight we had some massive "leg" issues and she was almost delirious in pain -- so she agreed to let us contact a doctor tomorrow first thing. Two hours later she's whimpering and sighing and whining from discomfort but the doctor? Out of the question. She's "fine for now".

I want to strangle her sometimes. Btw - the woman has insurance. This wouldn't wipe her out at all, she just likes to be miserable to get attention/sympathy.

yet, bad stuff.. that looks disgusting. like someone just slabbed their fingers across her leg and some skin came off.. it looks like the blood stain fingers from the movie Insidious.. minus the blood.

Re: Unhappy Legs

She really needs to see a Doctor. Do you live in the US? Is she afraid of going to the DR or just too lazy? Because they have doctors and nurses who make home visits to the house for homebound people, Maybe she can be set up with those services, but she would have to be seen by an MD or the ER first. It looks pretty nasty.. a bad infection is inevitable.
