Traumatic Amputation
Case of a 17 year-old boy who sustained wrist amputation after a crush injury with a stamping mill! Traumatic hand amputations can be catastrophic injuries, and often occur in young productive patients. Amputations may be partial (some tissue connects the amputated part to the body) or complete (the amputated part is completely severed from the body). Preoperative preparation of the patient includes radiography of both amputated and stump parts to determine the level of injury and suitability for replantation. Although replantation has improved the lives of many, not all persons who have experienced amputation are candidates for replantation |
