Todd Orr Photos: Bear Attack Pictures and Injuries, Montana, October 1, 2016
Todd Orr, 50, survived two attacks by a sow grizzly while scouting for elk in the Bear Creek drainage south of Ennis, Montana, on October 1, 2016. Orr said the bear charged while accompanied by cubs. He discharged bear spray when she was about 25 feet away, but she continued toward him and attacked. The bear left, then attacked Orr again about 10 minutes later as he tried to walk out. He suffered multiple bites and puncture wounds to his arms, shoulders and head, including a five-inch scalp laceration near his ear. Madison County Sheriff Roger Thompson said Orr also sustained a small fracture of his left forearm. Orr later reported nerve damage in his left hand. Orr reached the trailhead, recorded a video on his phone and drove himself 17 miles to Madison Valley Medical Center in Ennis for treatment. |

We are lucky to only have the very rare black bear in this area. However, we do have a very large puma that ranges our area. Conservation officers have observed it, as has my roommate. She observed it lounging in the shade about 100 yards from the edge of the "mowed yard" while she cut the lawn. Ever since, we don't mow the yard without bear spray and a sidearm. Sometimes puma around here will mistake a riding mower for a prey animal, such as a calf. Lucky for me, I only saw that cat several years ago when it was still fairly adolescent. |
