Dog Gored by Javalina
This working livestock dog earned his keep, and got on the bad side of a javalina (a small peccary native to the southwest/central USA). Javalinas are known for their bad tempers, so he got off relatively light. A lot of dogs get killed by these nasty little piggies! Photos are before, during and after his stitch up. |

Re: Dog Gored by Javalina
He was extremely lucky. He was probably a really fast dog, otherwise he wouldn't have gotten away. Dogs virtually NEVER survive a fight with a Javelina. They are like little bulldozers with a really bad temper. Once you get them fired up, they WILL NOT stop their attack until the attacker is dead. They don't look for trouble (We have them in our neighborhood all the time. They tip over the trash cans to eat the garbage) but if you mess with them, they will attack immediately, especially if they have young with them. They are also VERY STINKY, with a strong musky smell. Besides garbage, they also eat cactus, spines and all. I will see if I can't post some pics of them. |

Re: Dog Gored by Javalina
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Peccaries A peccary (also javelina or skunk pig) is a medium-sized hoofed mammal of the family Tayassuidae (New World pigs) in the suborder Suina along with the Old World pigs, Suidae. They are found throughout Central and South America and in the southwestern area of North America. Peccaries usually measure between 90 and 130 cm (3.0 and 4.3 ft) in length, and a full-grown adult usually weighs about 20 to 40 kg (44 to 88 lb). Peccaries, which are native to the Americas, are often confused with the pig family that originated in Afro-Eurasia, especially since some domestic pigs brought by European settlers have escaped over the years and now run wild as "razorback" hogs in many parts of the United States. ![]() In many countries, especially in the developing world, they are raised on farms as a source of food for local communities. |
