but why?
let me guess...

1. could it be that you don't blink under full anethesia so in case your eyes aren't completely shut, they won't dry out?

2. or is it in case someone takes a photo or video, it serves as a "disguise" sorta like pics with the black rectangle across the eyes to hide the persons identity except hospitals almost never remember to order those black rectangles so they usually make do with what they have?

(the first one was a serious guess. the second one wasn't - in case you didn't know.)
