A subconjunctival hemorrhage occurs when a small blood vessel breaks open and bleeds near the surface of the white of the eye (bulbar conjunctiva). It may happen without injury, and is often first noticed when you wake up and look in a mirror.
High blood pressure can be a contributing factor, as can diabetis, internal eye pressure, blood vessels leaking or rupturing from violent sneezing or uncontrollable cough. Severe eye irritation inc rubbing the eye due to allergies or foreign bodies in the eye, even sensitivity to contact lenses.
Most notably, strangulation victims often have subconjunctival hemorrhage- also due to extreme pressure on the blood vessels of the eyes.

I woke up one morning with this. My eye had gotten to dry while I slept, when I opened my eye, the cornea stuck to my eyelid and tore and the most of the white part of my eye looked like this.
