I can actually see the cause a bit more easily now, tears actually have 3 layers, water, oil, and mucus. Well that oil has to be produced from somewhere, so now it doesn't quite seem so far-fetched that a person could have clogged-up little areas in the eye itself.

My guess is that it's caused by putting on too much oily eye makeup.
Yes, but using the wrong stuff to remove it is as bad. Fyi baby oil is known to cause this. Meiobian cysts, i think they're called.
