I've seen them use maggots to eat dead tissue. Or leeches to help with tissue perfusion.. but damn!!  Worked on an ortho unit one time where a guy came up from the ED complaining on intense itching under his cast, it was cut off an underneath was his very own maggot farm!

Those are maggots. They are eating the decaying flesh. Maggots are used in hospitals for the same reason.
