Not true in most states. Some states have a Mental Hygine law that allows them to commit a person they deem at risk to themselves (extreme eating disorders, severe cutting that can lead to death, etc.), but not all states. Even in states that have the Mental Hygine law, it can be difficult to have someone committed for a psych evaluation. Most of the time you have to literally come out and say "I fear I am a danger to myself and might kill myself" or something along those lines. I know because both my cousin and an aunt have had to go to the hospital for severe suicidal thoughts - without the actions, they had to verbally acknowledge their risk.

I, also, feel the need to point out that the DSM5 is (supposedly) going to correct the fact that cutting does not equal suicidal ideation. Someone who cuts does not often want to kill themselves. It is a physical release of pain to mimic the emotional pain they are currently feeling. It can be cathartic. It needs to be discussed in therapy, but the simple act of cutting does not mean a person wants to kill themselves. It's their equivalent to getting high/drunk. It's a release.

Granted, the poor women in these pictures has taken cutting to a new level. She clearly is in a large amount of pain, and if the quotes from the previous posts are true, she sounds like she completely disassociates from the action and does need immediate mental health action. If she's blacking out the action, there is nothing stopping her from taking it too far on accident, since she is not really aware of the actions she is doing. Either way, she must be in a large amount of pain to do what she does to herself.

What a complete load of bullshit. 'A danger to herself' just because she cuts. Unless she has a severe mental illness she can do what the fuck she likes to her self, she's an adult and has capacity to make decisions. Just because people do fucked up things to themselves does not mean they are 'mad'. If you think locking away these people helps then you'd have institutions full of these people whose behaviour doesn't often change. Self harm is a complex issue that can not be 'cured' by locking people up. As long as they sort out their own wounds and keep the fuck away from wasting time at the ER I couldn't give a shit what they slice off personally.

Amazes me how people can accept that people are 'bad' and choose 'sanely' to kill people, but then think you have to be 'mad' to butcher yourself. Some people are JUST FUCKING WEIRD, end of.

this is so disturbing. this goes beyond emo. she is suffering from a severe mental disturbance that goes beyond self harm. I think she is also treating her wounds on her own without medical intervention the supplies she has and the sutures seem very suspicious. Aside from that ,she would be slapped with a title 36 and thrown in a hospital with all the past scarring and her current wounds... shes not being treated for these. matter of time before she will aquire a massive infection. unless she or somebody who is enabling is in the medical field...........

I don't mean that in a bad way even, I know many people who cut. But that is just disgusting. That's straight nasty. I mean, better she do it to herself rather than someone else but dude why the hell hasn't someone court ordered this person to a mental hospital. I mean come on why the hell isn't she in an institution?! That's mentally ill beyond all belief!
