Usually they are being abused. They do it to cope because it is the one thing that they can control and it numbs them. For most it's a phase and nothing as severe as this girl. I hope she got help.

The pic with what looks like a vent on the floor with rats next to it. Can't tell if the rats are real, but look at the way the blood goes over the corner of the vent. As well as the a one of the rats under the blood in that same area, that part looks photo shopped.
